It is always a bold mounted the tales of Hoffmann, the long and complex opera of Offenbach, even more so when there is a large budget or a team of well experienced musicians and singers. However, the implementation offered by the Miami Music Festival (MMF) in the Shepard & Ruth K. Broad Performing Arts Center at Barry University, June 29 and July 1, passed the test with outstanding note.
Female voices that surrounded him was played with efficiency and conviction in their difficult roles. Jesse Mashburn and Nicklausse/La Muse, had greater participation in scene and the beautiful final duo, but Maria Kerlee, as Antonia, managed to gain applause in her poignant role. The sensual Cynthia Ramos Giulietta also won the public, especially in the famous barcarolle with Mashburn. Although one of the most applauded was Shinhee Kim by funny the automaton Olympia and its well-known aria role Les oiseaux dans the charmille.
Cory McGee as Lindorf, Copernicus and Crespel had ample opportunity to show off her powerful voice and her histrionic. Ryan Hill followed it closely also in evil roles. And cannot be overlooked the work of Ehimemen Omigie as Spalanzani and Megan Saslow as the voice.
The minor roles and the chorus were very good; but without a doubt, the key to the success of this production as well structured was the stage direction of Jennifer Williams and solid and vibrant orchestral direction in charge of the extraordinary Caren Levine.
A round of applause for the beautiful and magical projections designed by Yee Eun Nam, key element to create atmospheres, and the minimal but very functional set of Yuki Izumihara. Equally plausible costumes Patricia Hibbert, and kudos to the lights of Ronald Burns, which gave the show a very professional level. Without doubt a very competitive production within their level of limited resources and that the long standing ovation is well deserved.
