A Soprano Leaps from Precipice to Precipice

LENOX – Barbara Bonney went from precipice to precipice in her recital Tuesday night at Tanglewood. In Caren Levine, a Tanglewood Music Center alumna, Bonney had help from a pianist who seems to think and breathe as she did. Accompanying, Levine offered the kind of support that makes a singer sounds even better but doesn’t call attention to itself. In the postludes and other solo passages, her imagination and strength belied her slight presence at the keyboard. The program ended with “On This Island,” an early work by Benjamin Britten. They pose considerable technical and expressive challenges, which seemed no challenges at all to Bonney and Levine.
